REOPENING DOWNTOWN ELGIN

Explore options below for ways to support our local businesses and come together as a community. Beginning on May 29th, some restaurants and businesses are reopening following strict CDC guidelines. Others are still dedicated to take out, delivery or curbside delivery, online shopping and virtual programing or have limited opening capabilities for the time being. Please remember, always follow social distancing guidelines.

As Downtown Elgin Coronavirus information evolves, details on this page will be updated. Local businesses are working hard to innovate in these challenging times and the Downtown Neighborhood Association of Elgin will continue to support them. Together we’ll get through this.  THANK YOU FOR YOUR ONGOING SUPPORT.

Click the arrow to quick scroll down for more reopening details.

Share pictures of your walk on social media using #ELGINWALKS and tag a Downtown business or organization for your chance to win 1 of 2 $50 Downtown Elgin gift certificates! When the Stay-at-Home order is lifted we will randomly draw 2 winners.

#ELGINWALKS

Take a walk to see some sights, get some exercise and enjoy your neighborhood while safely maintaining social distance guidelines. The five neighborhoods surrounding Downtown Elgin each offer hidden gems and unique attractions. You can walk to a park, walk to pick-up take out food, walk by a historic home or take a self-guided neighborhood tour. Help us showcase the hidden gems in our town and show off why we all enjoy living in Elgin!

ORDER TAKE OUT

When you’re tired of eating home cooked meals or are short on time remember most Downtown Elgin restaurants are still serving food for take out, delivery or curbside pickup. We’ve compiled a listing of restaurants with links to their Elgin take out menus, contact information and available ordering options. Is Coronavirus a Concern with Take Out?

VIRTUAL PROGRAMMING – STAY HOME, STAY SAFE!

From art and history to yoga and belly dancing, there is something for everyone to enjoy from home! Challenge yourself or race your family to finish the Downtown Elgin Word Search.

WALKING MAP

As part of the #ELGINWALKS initiative we’ve created a custom map highlighting sights to see in the neighborhoods surrounding Downtown Elgin. The map also shows ideal walking routes for easy access to the Downtown. Explore the area virtually and make plans to take a walk soon!

EXPLORE LOCAL PARKS

Elgin Parks and Recreation invites you to explore Elgin’s 77 parks and facilities as you walk to stay active this spring. The Explore Elgin Parks Walking Tour is designed to promote wellness by encouraging families and individuals to walk more and stay healthy!

A powerful message from City of Elgin Mayor Dave Kaptain.A message from Mayor David Kaptain:

"Last evening's peaceful protest at Elgin's police station demonstrates what this community has been doing for some time now. We come together during painful and difficult times to engage in meaningful conversations. Our community-wide gatherings⏤whether occurring in meeting rooms, places of worship or on the streets and sidewalks⏤have been and continue to be the hallmark of this great city. We use these conversations to educate and enlighten ourselves, and then commit to work necessary for making any needed change.

The senseless killing of George Floyd is creating fear, hurt and outrage in Elgin, and those feelings are wholly justified. This is a city with no tolerance for racism, a city that instead strives for diversity and inclusion in all its many actions. We will continue to engage in the challenging conversations this tragedy demands, and in the end, Elgin will be better and stronger. This will be an even greater city.

Join me, my colleagues on the city council, the police department, and all other city staff in continuing the highest levels of responsible community engagement during these momentous times. Our commitment to do what's right and best will ensure Elgin continues to be the welcoming home for the diverse residents and businesses in which we take such pride."
