NeighborWorks Day 2019 Was a Huge Success!

Over 30 volunteers revitalized 7 properties in the Watch Factory Neighborhood

In 2019 we partnered with the City of Elgin, Elgin Community Network and Davey Tree Service to focus on 7 properties in the Watch Factory Neighborhood. Volunteers spent the day working on landscaping, fence removal, painting, mulching, building a retaining wall and more! The properties were revitalized with love and it shows! Thank you to everyone who participated. Your efforts made a big difference in this neighborhood and help Elgin put it’s best foot forward!

NeighborWorks Day is a time when volunteers, business people, neighbors, friends and local government leaders mobilize neighborhood revitalization. NeighborWorks Day is a project of the Downtown Elgin Neighborhood Outreach committee which is made up of leaders from the GPA, NENA, SWAN and NWNA neighborhood groups. Our goal is to utilize this annual project to reach out into the neighborhoods surrounding our downtown, help people in need, positively impact maintenance conditions for mutual benefit and build relationships in our community.

What NeighborWorks Day is All About

NeighborWorks Day is a time when volunteers, business people, neighbors, friends and local government leaders mobilize neighborhood change and block by block revitalization. Hosted for many years in our community by NHS of the Fox Valley who closed their doors in the fall of 2017, the DNA picked up the torch in 2018 and adopted the project, giving it a renewed mission. Our goal for this annual project is to reach out into the neighborhoods surrounding our downtown, positively impact maintenance conditions for mutual benefit and build relationships in our community beyond the boundaries of Downtown.

The DNA’s first year organizing NeighborWorks Day was on June 16th, 2018 and concentrated on the Gifford Park Association. In partnership with the Elgin Community Network and the City of Elgin, we focused on 11 properties in highly visible areas of the Gifford Park Neighborhood along Villa, E. Chicago Street and more. Some of the projects our team of volunteers completed in 2018 were:

  • Removed 3 old fences
  • Built 1 brand new fence
  • Painted 1 porch
  • Installed new porch lights on 1 house
  • Completed 9 landscaping improvements
  • Removed 1 dead tree

We have a big job to do here in Elgin making our City the best it can be and we are going to need your help to do it!  If you would like to volunteer for the next NeighborWorks Day please click here. Join us and make a friend by helping a neighbor!
