Explore Downtown Elgin & Surrounding Neighborhoods

April 15, 2020

The Downtown Neighborhood Association of Elgin in partnership with 5 neighboring community groups created #ELGINWALKS as a way to encourage community members to walk for exercise while also seeing local attractions and exploring new neighborhoods. At www.DowntownElgin.com/ElginWalks you can learn more about surrounding neighborhoods including the Gifford Park area, the North East Neighborhood, the Near West neighborhood, the Elgin Watch Factory district and the South West area. “Walking is one thing you can still enjoy while maintaining social distance guidelines.” says Jennifer Fukala, DNA Executive Director. “DNA worked closely with the surrounding neighborhoods to create ideal walking routes from the neighborhoods into the Downtown as well as highlight special attractions unique to each neighborhood. We’re excited to showcase the neighborhoods on our website including an interactive mapping component.”

Suggested walking routes, sights to see and the interactive map are just the beginning of the #ELGINWALKS initiative. Ways to enhance your walk are also featured on the website including virtual walking tours of the historic district, public art, Downtown Elgin and more. In the midst of the Coronavirus pandemic the DNA encourages walkers to follow social distance guidelines. Still, you can walk to a park, walk to pick-up take out food, walk by a historic home or take a self-guided neighborhood tour.

Help us showcase the hidden gems in our town and show off why we all enjoy living in Elgin! Here’s how to participate on social media with #ELGINWALKS:

1) Explore the Downtown Elgin area or surrounding communities.
2) Post a picture of your walk to social media with #ELGINWALKS.
3) Tag a Downtown Elgin business.

Please explore responsibly by maintaining social distance and wearing a mask.
