The Downtown Neighborhood Association (DNA)
asks you to support the organization that supports downtown Elgin!

The Downtown Neighborhood Association (DNA) of Elgin, IL is a non-profit volunteer-driven organization that represents the interests of Elgin’s Central Business District. The Association’s purpose is to foster a center of activity and ensure economic stability for the heart of Elgin through organization, design, promotion and economic revitalization, and we can do this through your support.

  • Some member benefits include:
*Priority listing on the DNA’s “Top 10” and “Weekend Reminder”
*Official downtown Elgin Ribbon Cuttings, Open Houses and Anniversary Celebrations
*Marketing of available downtown Elgin properties
*Member assistance and promotions for member events and happenings
*Complimentary use of DNA resources such as folding tables, chairs, pop-up tents and signs
  • This past year, we have accomplished a lot, and here is just a sampling:
*Since the DNA’s Design Committee achieved recognition for Downtown Elgin on the National Register for Historic Places last year, we had created the historical walking tour of downtown Elgin. We worked with community partners such as the Elgin History MuseumGail Borden Public Library and individual community volunteers to see this through.
*We hosted the  “Downtown Elgin Real Estate Tour”, which attracted new businesses, realtors and developers to Elgin’s central business district.
*We also brought in thousands of visitors with our special events, such as the Downtown Elgin Pub Crawl, Window Wonderland, Small Business Saturday and much more.
*The DNA Board and Staff has established relationships with both Elgin Academy and Judson University to create opportunities for our downtown stakeholders that were previously not available.

The above is only a slice of what we have accomplished, but we cannot carry out our mission without the generous support of our Members. Thank you, in advance, for supporting your Downtown via the DNA.

Memberships start at $30.

Deirdre White Named New DNA Executive Director

DeirdreAN ANNOUNCEMENT FROM DNA BOARD PRESIDENT KARIN JONES:

On behalf of the Downtown Neighborhood Association of Elgin and our Board of Directors, we would like to welcome Deirdre White as our new Executive Director. Deirdre has been a board member with the DNA for the last two and a half years and a volunteer with us for much longer than that. She has served on numerous committees within DNA and we are all very excited to be a part of her next steps with our organization.  She brings with her a love for everything downtown and her ever present, up beat, get it done spirit.

Her official first day will be August 12th. So for those of you who know Deirdre, please congratulate and welcome her in our Downtown Elgin way!  Those of you that have not yet met her, look forward to meeting her soon!

The dynamics at DNA are about to shift yet again as we continue to evolve and change during our 15th year! With the recent hiring of Don Obenauf as our Economic Development Director and now Deirdre as our new Executive Director, we foresee quite the dynamic duo and many exciting things in our future!

And you all know I can’t resist quoting Dr. Seuss so, Deirdre, our advice to you is, “Why fit in when you were made to stand out?”

Welcome aboard! We look forward to seeing you in full swing!

Honoring Our Volunteers: DNA Board of Directors

Volunteer_HeartIn honor of National Volunteer Week, the Downtown Neighborhood Association (DNA) of Elgin would like to recognize our volunteers who have been at the very heart of DNA’s downtown revitalization efforts for more than 15 years.

Today we are recognizing the board members from our DNA Board of Directors. Through proactive advocacy, volunteerism, fundraising and promotion, the DNA Board carries out the Downtown Neighborhood Association of Elgin’s mission, which is as follows:

– Market Downtown as the cultural, civic, and symbolic center of the community and support activities and special events that maintain Downtown’s economic role in the community

– Retain and enhance Downtown’s locally owned, small business community to serve both resident and visitor needs, to promote sustainability (shop local), and to maintain Downtown’s unique character

– Maintain and enhance Downtown’s burgeoning mix of dining establishments, entertainment venues and other cultural opportunities

– Market the unique character and adaptability of Downtown’s available properties; incent and assist property owners with façade improvements and other aesthetic enhancements

– Lay the foundation for retail redevelopment via an aggressive recruitment and marketing strategy aimed at small to mid-size “creative class” businesses and organizations

– Continue to diversify the DNA’s portfolio of revenue streams by adding more sustainable revenue streams over the next 2-3 years

Several board members also serve on the DNA’s Organization (Org) Committee, which establishes consensus and cooperation by building partnerships among the various groups that have a stake in our downtown. By getting everyone working toward the same goal, DNA can provide effective, ongoing management and advocacy for our downtown.
