International Cycling Classic USA Cycling

The City of Elgin has been selected to host a stage for the International Cycling Classic & Superweek Pro Tour, held July 9-26, 2009. Cyclists from all over the world come to compete in this 17-day event series held in 12 center cities throughout Illinois and Wisconsin.

The Sherman Health Elgin Cycling Classic will bring back its famous “road race” on Sunday, July 12, with the course starting and ending in downtown, making a 6-mile loop through the residential neighborhood and commercial corridor of route 25 northeast of downtown.

In addition to the road race, the Sherman Health Elgin Cycling Classic includes a festival of live music, food and vendors near the start/finish line at the Douglas Street Sports Bar & Grill.

Elgin's official cycling tradition began with the Four Bridges Road Race, which the City hosted 2000-2002. The Elgin Cycling Classic was then launched in 2005, and has brought in more than 300 local cyclists annually. This year is expected to bring more than 700 Olympic-hopeful riders from all over the world.
