Home Is Where the Art Is at Elgin Artspace

Elgin Artspace LoftsTo celebrate April as Fair Housing Month, HOPE Fair Housing Center is presenting a gallery art show called Home Is Where the Art Is from 3:00pm to 7:00pm on April 13th 2013 at Elgin Artspace Lofts, located at 51 S. Spring Street. The competition is open to all artists, with outreach to a number of different groups, including low-income, various ethnicities, people with disabilities, and seniors, among others, with only one entry allowed per artist. All submitted pieces must be 2D or 3D and carry the fair housing theme. Attendees of the event will vote for the winners and cash prizes will be awarded.

The evening will feature a Welcome by Mayor Dave Kaptain and Keynote Address delivered by Sara Pratt, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Enforcement for HUD’s Office of Fair Housing & Equal Opportunity, as well as food and beverages, the gallery showing and art competition, and tours of the Elgin Artspace Lofts, a new affordable housing development that offers 55 units of affordable live/work space to low-income artists and their families. All artwork will be available for purchase with 100% of the proceeds going to the artist. Tickets are $50.00 and will benefit Artspace residents and support the event and HOPE’s programming.

HOPE Fair Housing Center is a 501(c)(3) non-profit civil rights organization that has been fighting to end discrimination and segregation since 1968. HOPE works to create greater housing opportunities and choice for people of all economic levels and to ensure that all people may freely choose a place to live without regard to their race, color, religion, sex, age, disability, national origin, sexual orientation, or because they have children in their family. Through Home Is Where the Art Is, HOPE aims to raise awareness and promote equal opportunity in housing for all, as well as to highlight Artspace and encourage the sustainability of a diverse creative community in Elgin.
