Shining “Prom Time” Spotlight on Downtown Elgin

Don your tuxes and gowns, tighten up your garters and cufflinks and pin on your date’s corsage or boutonnière. This year we’re taking downtown Elgin from prime time to “Prom time”!

The Downtown Neighborhood Association’s Annual Awards Gala will be held on Thursday, October 11 from 6-9PM at the Grand Victoria Casino’s Fox River Room. The Gala is our organization’s largest fundraiser of the year as well as our opportunity to recognize the individuals, businesses and organizations from the community that make downtown Elgin a great place to live, work and enjoy.

Individual DNA Awards Gala tickets are $65 each ($55 for current DNA members) or reserve a Sponsored Table of 8 for $560 per table ($485 for current DNA members). Reserve your tickets now via our online Awards Gala Ticket Reservation Page.

The Gala will feature plenty of prom-tastic activities including prom photos, crowning of the best dressed Prom King and Queen and their court, dancing to all your favorite prom tunes from over the years, a yearbook photo wall to see if you can guess which Elginites captained the football team, made the honor roll or were voted most likely to succeed, and exclusive prom after parties in downtown Elgin establishments.

September Goes Prom Time!

Just after Labor Day, Elginites may notice prom popping up all over downtown Elgin. That’s because the DNA, in conjunction with the YWCA Elgin and Elgin Junior Service Board, are teaming up on a community wide promotion entitled Pop Up Prom. Several downtown storefront windows will be looking resplendent decorated in their finest prom regalia complete with mannequins dressed in unique prom fashions from over the years, courtesy of the YWCA’s Cindy’s Super Sale taking place on Saturday, September 29.

Then on Thursday, September 20, don’t miss out on our very own patented “Prom Mob” as fashion models will be “Gala-vanting” all over downtown showcasing unique prom fashions and styles in an impromptu outdoor fashion walk, culminating with a grand finale Prom Time! Fashion Show and Fundraiser at Villa Verone Ristorante Italiano, 13 Douglas Avenue, starting at 7PM. You may even see a Zombie pageant girl or two promoting the 2012 Miss Zombie Pageant – part of the City of Elgin’s Nightmare on Chicago Street event on Saturday, October 27.

If you are unable to attend this year’s Awards Gala, you can still support the DNA’s downtown revitalization efforts by Purchasing 50/50 Gala Raffle Tickets for $10 each. Winners need not be present. Our organization’s goal is to sell 10,000 raffle tickets which would mean our three winners would split a $50,000 prize! How’s that for a memorable prom night?

Gala Marketing Opportunities are also available. Please feel free to contact DNA Managing Director Jason Pawlowski at (847) 488-1456 or with any inquiries about marketing opportunities. Custom packages are available.

Whether you bring a date or go stag, we invite you to join us at the 2012 DNA Awards Gala for the biggest formal party of the year in downtown Elgin!

Strategic Plan Advisory Committee Application

At the July 25 Elgin City Council Meeting, an initiative was put forward to appoint a Strategic Plan Advisory Committee to assist the city council and city manager in the on-going monitoring and implementation of the soon to be adopted 2013-2017 Strategic Plan. This committee is to consist of members of the city’s standing advisory boards and commissions as well as additional community members who have an interest in serving their community. This task force will assist the City Council and City Manager in evaluating the community’s receptiveness to service level adjustments and/or revenue enhancements.

The Strategic Plan Advisory Committee (SPAC) is an eleven member advisory board appointed by the Mayor with the advice and consent of the Elgin City Council. Seven of the members shall be comprised of existing board members from the various standing advisory committees and four members shall be selected from the community at-large. SPAC members serve five-year terms. The Committee’s charge is to preserve the life of the city council’s strategic plan document by assisting the City Council and City Manager in the on-going prioritization of strategic priorities. The SPAC will study, monitor and continue to update the Strategic Plan, and at the same time, encourage citizen input and citizen driven projects. The SPAC will also determine, in conjunction with the city council and city manager, where the use of sub-committees may be of assistance in pursuing the various objectives of the strategic plan.

Please submit your application by 5:00 p.m. on September 7, 2012.

New DNA Managing Director

An Announcement from DNA Board President, Karin Jones

DNA Members, Partners and Friends:

The Downtown Neighborhood Association (DNA) Board of Directors is pleased to announce that Jason Pawlowski has accepted promotion to the position of Managing Director of the DNA. With his knowledge and experience in all we do at the DNA, we are very excited and looking forward to his innovative new perspective in this new position. We are confident that we will be moving forward as a newly restructured and stronger organization with Jason as the Managing Director.

As DNA Promotions Coordinator for the last two years, Jason has overseen many of the association’s special events, marketing and promotions initiatives. He has helped stimulate additional stakeholder engagement by expanding the organization’s social media footprint and markedly increasing DNA’s Downtown Neighborhood News Top 10 weekly eblast subscriber list thru a variety of engaging promotions, including the Illinois Main Street Award winning Downtown Madness. Jason has also been instrumental in developing relationships with the Elgin non-profit community, special event sponsors, downtown Elgin businesses, DNA Partners, and new DNA members.

The DNA Board congratulates Jason Pawlowski on his promotion to Managing Director and looks forward to continued success and growth of the Downtown Neighborhood Association under his leadership.

I turn once again to one of my favorites in describing Jason’s dedication to DNA:

“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” – Dr. Seuss.

And I can assure you, we would be hard pressed to find someone that cares more about the DNA than Jason! Thank you for rising to the occasion Jason.

Board President
