Riverside Drive Promenade

The city has been awarded $8,000,000 in funding from the River Edge Redevelopment Grant to reconstruct Riverside Drive – the last 1500 feet of downtown riverfront to be redeveloped. The funding is provided by Illinois Jobs Now! Capital plan, administered by DCEO for the demolition of the existing Riverside Drive decking and the construction of a new environmentally sensitive structure creating the Riverside Drive Promenade.

Features include permeable pavers, bio-swales, traffic calming devices and bicycle paths consistent with existing riverfront improvements in Elgin’s downtown.

Construction is expected to begin in the spring of 2012 and be complete in the spring of 2013.

Tech Hub

Small, start-up tech companies are attracted to downtown’s urban amenities and affordable rents that allow for growth and innovation. Many of these businesses are finding a home in the Elgin Technology Center in downtown’s iconic Elgin Tower Building.

Elgin Artspace Lofts

Artists and arts-related businesses have access to a burgeoning creative community that will flourish with the opening of the Elgin Artspace Lofts in November 2012.

The Artspace project will transform an historic Sears and Roebuck store in downtown Elgin into an arts facility that includes 55 units of affordable live/work space for artists and their families, plus 6,000 square feet of retail and community space for arts-friendly businesses and nonprofit organizations.

Built in 1908 and most recently occupied by Elgin Community College, the old Sears store is bound on the north by DuPage Street and on the south by Fulton Street. The Artspace project will involve renovating the historic structure and linking it to a new three-story addition.

Artspace is a Minneapolis-based not-for-profit real estate development company with a mission to create, foster, and preserve affordable space for artists and arts organizations.
